Roaming the discotheques in the 80’s and 90’s I was inspired by the DJ’s and their mixing skills. Eric benjamin and Rens vd Mar from ‘the Marathon’ in the Hague, Peter Slaghuis (RIP) from ‘the Bluetiek Inn’ in Rotterdam. Listening to Radio Stad Den Haag, the mixes on Veronica by Ben Liebrand, ‘de bond van doorstarters’ on the Soulshow by Ferry Maat to name but a few.
Eager to imitate these skilled technicians I got not much further then trying to mix with one turntable an old Revox A700 (perfect for making loops) and a cassette deck. Sampling was done by cutting tape on the beats and gluing them back together. My first ever mix was about 16 minutes but it took me about 3 months to make it. I also travelled around Holland spinning the wheels of steel with my mate Arjan Dijkshoorn on the Manhattan Drive-In show. That was pure fun, spinning mostly the same setlist and sing-a-long bangers at barn-party’s or campings just making people happy.

And then life happened, got married, had children, make some kind of career so mixing music was a bit on hold. Later as kids grew older and started to stand on their own feet I picked it up again, just for the fun of it. The mixes I make for Intense are mostly done on computer using Mixmeister or on a Numark N4 deck using Serato with also an Audio Technica AT-LP120 turntable connected for the classic feel. Lately I started fiddling about with FL-studio and a little Akai keyboard, who knows what can become of that…
For now I just enjoy making ‘Break de Week’ mixes trying to blend all sorts of styles in my very little studio.
